History of the city |
Originally called “The Pleasant Land” by the Algonquian people, Milwaukee is the lakefront citythat lights up the northern Midwest. With its diverse population and living history, the city makes reality seem less harsh and dreams more achievable. Just 90 miles from Chicago and 80 miles from Madison, Milwaukee enjoy a proud history and a vibrant present with easy proximity to both nature and city life.
The Milwaukee area began to grow around 1820 and gained a city charter in 1846. The city had an abundance of German, French, and Polish influence. By 1880, 27% of the Milwaukee population was German and some of their most famous names remain with us today through their breweries. The lakeside location allowed industry to blossom and culture to thrive. Churches including the Basilica of St. Josaphat became the beacons of local life. |
